This year's event is expected to attract close to 450 knowledge industry professionals from around the province.

The deadline for nominations is March 26.

The awards ceremony will be held on May 6 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel.

KIRA 2010 will honour excellence in New Brunswick's knowledge industry by recognizing companies and individuals.

Hosted by Enterprise Fredericton, KIRA has seven award categories. Visit www.kirawards.ca to see listings and entry forms.

New Brunswick companies and individuals can initiate their entries or be nominated by someone else.

"In New Brunswick, we have lots of amazing work being developed that we should be proud of" said KIRA 2010 co-chairwoman Colleen Benson. "The KIRA Awards give New Brunswick's knowledge industry the opportunity to profile companies and individuals leading the way in entrepreneurship and innovation."

"Receiving a KIRA Award remains coveted in its recognition," said co-chairwoman Carolyn Kervin. "In a vibrant industry such as this one, these awards have truly become a symbol of peer recognition and achievement of the highest standard."

R3 Gala will honour three top N.B. researchers

Some questions and ideas are certainly more challenging than others, and many are rife with uncertainty, from how to get started, to what to do when it's not working. Do you abandon it and give up? Start over? Or change your approach?

It is the third question you'll find most researchers ask, albeit with deep frustration. But frustration is good. It means one or several possible approaches have been eliminated, taking you even closer to the solution. If you feel frustrated by what you're doing, you're probably on the right track.

Aside from teaching, the work that many of the applied researchers do at our universities plays a significant role in building new economic opportunities in New Brunswick. While some of their experiments do take several years to complete, in many cases, their work leads to breakthroughs that have a valuable effect on industry.

It may not be some flashy new product you can see, or feel, or taste. Most of the time it's a process or a way of doing something that only a few of us could ever hope to understand. But the way in which it gets applied to industry, right here in New Brunswick, is creating opportunities in places you would never guess.

Consider one company, Atlantic Hydrogen in Fredericton. It was the founder of Fundy Cable, Bill Stanley, who got that company going, with the help of the University of New Brunswick. Starting with only a theory about how to remove carbon from natural gas before it's burned, it was a handful of professors and researchers that finally produced the prototype that would actually do it.

Today, Atlantic Hydrogen's CarbonSaver technology is being adopted by companies across North America, and as far away as Italy. Taking something from idea, to research, to application and commercialization: it's something we need to inspire more people to do, not to mention give them the resources they need to do it.

On March 18, the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation will, for the second time, honour three of the province's top researchers at the R3 Gala - Recognizing Research Results, in Fredericton.

The three incredible researchers will be presented and celebrated for research results that are making an impact on New Brunswick industry right now. Scientists are people of tremendous focus, and there's nothing more critical to the success and application of their work as exposure to the businesspeople that have the time, resources and management skills to help to commercialize their innovations.

So to help bring the brilliance of our researchers together with the industriousness of our businesspeople, we've invited entrepreneurial guru Guy Kawasaki to speak at R3 Gala.

If you're on Twitter, you're probably following Guy. Author of nine books, including The Art of the Start, he is one of the key people responsible for rolling out Apple's first Macintosh computer. Co-founder of Silicon Valley's Garage Technology Ventures, he has worked with organizations as big as Nike, Audi, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Stanford University and MIT. His grasp of the steps you need to take to inspire innovation, and to create new products and services out of ideas and concepts is unparalleled.

They say one of our downfalls in the Maritimes is that we don't "toot our own horns" enough, or celebrate our successes.

Well, how are we supposed to know what's going on if we don't? Watch in the coming weeks for more information about the researchers who will be profiled at the R3 Gala in March. You can get tickets online at nbif.ca.

Chet Wesley is the director of communications at the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation. The foundation makes investments in new growth-oriented companies and commercially driven research.

Hailed by the premier as New Brunswick's trailblazers in business, 15 companies were honoured with Innovation Recognition Awards Monday night.

Standing before a packed banquet room at Danny's Conference Centre in Beresford, Shawn Graham lauded the firms, each nominated for creating and adopting innovative practices.

"For much of our province's history, our economy was based mainly on industries that harnessed our natural resources,'' Graham told the gathering. "But now, at the outset of the 21st century, we're thriving more and more on account of our human resources.

"Increasingly, we're using our own vision to be competitive in the knowledge economy. And in light of the ground-breaking work being done by the companies represented here tonight, it's clear that we are succeeding."

Nominated by business development agencies across the province, the winners include one company that uses wireless technology to monitor and control the flow of sap in its production of organic maple syrup (Canadian Organic Maple of Bath); another that uses reverse osmosis as a means to clean drinking water (Atlantic Nuclear Services of Fredericton); and, one that manufactures cushy bicycle seats and sells them via the Internet to buyers all over the world (Spongy Wonder of Riverview).

"New Brunswick is home to many dynamic and motivated companies," Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau said. "Although these recipients come from different industries, they recognize the importance of constantly growing and adopting innovative practices.

"They are great entrepreneurs. They have shown great vision and continue to re-invest their success back into their companies."

Other winners were Tire Recycling Atlantic Canada Corp. of Minto; IC Agency Canada of Bathurst; Sticks and Stones Fabricating of St. Stephen; Energy Systems and Design Ltd., of Sussex; Confection 4e Dimension of Saint-Léonard; La Bergerie Aux 4 Vents of Sainte-Marie-de-Kent, Prima Innovations (Navigloo) of Saint-Jacques; ShadComm of Miramichi; Maison Beausoleil of Neguac; A. Landry Fabrication of Balmoral; Advanced Publishing of Saint John; and, Verger Belliveau Orchard of Memramcook.

Standing at a podium with the words "Be resourceful "¦ in this place" behind him, the premier congratulated the recipients and used the opportunity to promote government policies that he says has helped the business climate in New Brunswick. The Innovation Recognition gala is held every year as part of Small Business Week.

Graham said his government has provided $39.2 million in assistance to 144 small businesses and 161 projects since September 2006, and received applause after announcing that New Brunswick's unemployment rate last month was lower than Canada's for the first time since the modern labour survey started in 1976.

From recruiting advantages to increased morale, these organizations will enjoy many benefits from this prestigious distinction. All companies that participated also received the results of their employee survey, which will be used to help make their companies even better places to work."

The forum is funded by the broadband industry and one of its founders told CBC News that those companies see it as a way to market their products and services.

But Graham said on Wednesday that the forum has other sponsors and it's credible.

"This competition is brought forward at an academic level through New York University. It's been well-recognized across the globe as one of the most important competitions to enter into," Graham told reporters.

"And today you know I'm very proud of the fact that we have two communities in New Brunswick, both Fredericton and Moncton, in the intelligent communities competition."

Other cities in the event are in the United States, France, Sweden, Estonia and the Netherlands.

Graham is heading to New York on Thursday for the forum's annual conference along with officials from his government and Moncton and Fredericton.

The provincial government is co-sponsoring a reception at the ICF conference on Thursday evening.

The forum will announce Friday afternoon the city it considers the most intelligent community in the world.

GreenNexxus won first place in the most promising start-up category. Other KIRA Award winners were Q1 Labs Inc. for best export product; Chalk Media Corp. for private technology advancement; the Saint John Zone Breast Health Program for public technology advancement; and Ed Barrett won a KIRA for industry person of the year.
Going green has never been easier thanks to GreenNexxus.

The homegrown start-up company - co-founded by Fredericton's Peter Corbyn - is an online social networking platform dedicated to solving environmental issues and promoting eco-friendly technologies and lifestyles.

"It's a Facebook-style site to swap environmentally friendly tips," Corbyn said. "It's a place where members can post things that they're doing in their home life or businesses to be green."

On the heels of its success across the country, GreenNexxus won a KIRA Award Thursday night for most promising start-up.

"This kind of recognition from your peers is really appreciated," Corbyn said. "We've been fairly lucky this year and it's just really nice to be recognized."

For over a decade, the Knowledge Industry Recognition and Achievement Awards have recognized excellence in information and communication technology and learning and education innovation throughout New Brunswick.

The 11th annual gala at the Delta Fredericton was packed with the best and the brightest business leaders in the province. Following the clinking of drinks in the lobby and a five-course meal in the hotel's ballroom, the winners of seven categories - including best export product, technology advancement and industry person of the year - were announced.

"It's our way of shining the spotlight on these genuinely deserving organizations and individuals," said Doug Motty, CEO of Enterprise Fredericton, host of the annual event.

"I think it's important to recognize the companies in the province that are successful and celebrate their accomplishments," he said. "This event showcases what can done right here in our own backyard."

Accreon Inc., a Fredericton-based business consulting and information technology service provider, was the only company to win in two categories for export services and employment growth.

The other KIRA Award winners were Q1 Labs Inc. for best export product, Chalk Media Corp. for private technology advancement, the Saint John Zone Breast Health Program for public technology advancement and finally Ed Barrett won a KIRA for industry person of the year.

Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside said the accomplishments of these companies show that the province has the right climate for business.

"I couldn't think of a more wonderful place to do business than in New Brunswick," he said. "There is so much talent in this room and these people have worked hard to get here. And once a year we come together to applaud their work and encourage new businesses in the province."

The awards were hosted by Bette MacDonald, Gemini award winner for her CBC television performance in the Halifax Comedy Fest.

Premier Shawn Graham, who attended the event with his wife Roxanne Reeves, said the awards demonstrate the province's success over the past decade.

"Today information and communication technology is the second most important industry in the province," he said. "And it continues to grow at such an explosive rate - it's a testament to what the future holds for New Brunswick."

The KIRA Award is a harbinger of up-and-coming success for companies and GreenNexxus is ready to break out on a bigger stage.

The tech firm had one of its first breaks creating the online community forum behind Al Gore's Climate Project and more recently worked with CBC and Cisco Systems Inc. developing online tools for the One Millions Acts of Green campaign.

"There have been 1.6 million acts of green so far, saving 85,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emission," Corbyn said. "And we're now moving the project into the United States so we expect to see that number jump up."

GreenNexxus currently has six employees at its Fredericton headquarters. In addition to Corbyn the company has three other co-founders.

Ryan Groom and Paul Methot are both known as the "techies" and although his business card says "Chief Greennexxian," Ric Cuthbertson is known as the "money guy." Corbyn - with the official title of "Catalyst-" is known as the "green guy."
