Chris London supported by our up-coming graduates will speak about the Information Technology-Programmer/Analyst Co-op Program offered at our local community college. This program was formerly called Computer Programming Technology, a program that has been an IT staple in Saint John since 1982. You will learn about this program and how co-op education works at NBCC Saint John Campus. Recent achievements include a three year renewal to the national CIPS accreditation as well as a new 2+2 articulation agreement with UNBSJ's Bachelor of Information Sciences.

Security is most effectively implemented when it is part of the planning process and not added once all the other functional requirements are met. This approach also dramatically reduces the cost of security remediation efforts much in the same fashion as defects.

Curtis will discuss why it is crucial to change the view of security in regards to application delivery and how this shift in perspective will help deliver projects in a more cost effective manner.

Speaker Bio:

Curtis Wiseman is a Senior Technical Architect with Ambir, and brings over eleven years of experience in the specialized fields of security, technical architecture, and software design. Over his career Curtis has
engaged with and delivered solutions for major clients such as Allstate Insurance, The Bank of Montreal, Microsoft, Genesys Labs, and the RCMP. With globalization changing the security landscape, Curtis is able to
deliver global business understanding in complement with practical security designs that provide the best operational blend of security, business integrity assurance, and usability.

David Baxter Biography

David has a passion for developing and marketing "breakthrough" products and services. David's background is focused on creating customer value through the introduction and on-going management of emerging innovation. He is a practical dreamer; and been proven so over and over. He has the knowledge and experience to bring together the right people and the right tools to develop products and services to enable long-term success and business growth.

"If you think you have it right, you're not paying attention." David believes this is the guiding principle in the pursuit of competitive advantage through innovation; the creation of customer and company value. Get it "good enough" that your customers or stakeholders start using your products and services in ways you would never have thought of, David says. When you take this perspective then innovation, whether it's iterative enhancement or breakthrough, is about managing pleasant surprises.

David, who is also T4G's Vice-President Innovation, brings 20 years of telecommunications and technology experience with industry leaders like NBTel, MT&T, iMagicTV and Alcatel. For example, in the mid 1990s MT&T Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of the phone company in Nova Scotia, was way ahead of its time with a teledemocracy application, or tele-voting system with the push of a button. David played a key role in this forward-thinking service. He also spearheaded MT&T's (now Bell Aliant) launch of 7MBPS consumer DSL service, the first of its kind in Canada for software on demand. David also led the product development and management of the world-class iMagicTV and Alcatel IPTV middleware platforms and applications for telecom digital TV – bringing the interactive TV experience to the customers of "the telephone company".

Join in a discussion with Lee Devin, a business consultant from Philadelphia, who believes that businesses can learn a lot from studying the creative practices of artists.

Brought by the City Of Saint John, the Saint John Community Arts Board, Radian6, and Mariner Partners, Lee will be moderating a discussion that revolves around the questions: how can businesses learn from theatre? How can the Saint John Theatre Company play a role in that learning.

Lee Devin Biography
Lee Devin is a Senior Consultant with Cutter's Innovation and Social Networking practices. Lee's background in theatre brings a unique perspective to the challenges faced by IT managers and managers in general.

Lee is Professor of Theatre, Emeritus, and Senior Research Scholar at Swarthmore College, where in 1970 he founded The Theatre at Swarthmore College and taught the first "studio" courses (acting) ever offered there for academic credit. Lee is also Senior Dramaturg at People's Light and Theatre. He has won prizes and grants (NEA, Mellon, EARPLAY) for playscripts, librettos, and translations that have been published and/or produced in the US, Australia, Eastern Europe, and Canada.

Lee Devin is coauthor, with Cutter Fellow Rob Austin, of Artful Making: What Managers Need to Know about How Artists Work. In this seminal book the authors explain iterative processes used by theatre directors and actors to make plays. They apply theatre lore, principles, and methods to the management of knowledge workers who create business innovations. He has presented the ideas explored in Artful Making to a variety of audiences: he has given keynote talks at the Agile2005 conference, to the Theatre Communications Group, and has been a panelist at the Cutter Summit; he has presented at Harvard Business School's Innovation Seminar and made guest appearances in Harvard Business School classrooms.

Lee is coauthor, with Rob Austin, of "Beyond Requirements: Software Making as Art," IEEE Software, Jan/Feb, 2003; "Successful Innovation through Artful Process," Leader to Leader, Spring 2004; The Economics of Agility in Software Development, Working Paper, Harvard Business School; and "Planning to Get Lucky," Cutter IT Journal, Vol. 17, No. 11, November 2004. In addition, he is author of "An Innovative Frame of Mind," Cutter Benchmark Review, Vol. 6, No. 5, May 2006, and coauthor of "Improvisation and Teaching Negotiation: Developing Three Essential Skills," with Lakshmi Balachandra, Mary Crossan, Kim Leary, and Bruce Patton (Negotiation Journal, Vol. 21, No. 4, October 2005). He is currently at work on "Knowledge Work, Craft, and Calling," with Rob Austin, for Christian Faith and the Global Market, "Artistic Approaches to Management Problems," for The Handbook of 21st Century Management, and Reliable Innovation (Stanford University Press).

Lee earned his AB, with distinction and department honors, from San Jose State College. He was awarded both his MA and PhD from Indiana University.
