Mr. Smith was appointed as Chair of the Commission for a five-year term when the crown corporation was created on 1 July 2004.

Mr. Smith has been actively involved in securities regulation in New Brunswick since 1987. He is the second longest serving Chair of a securities regulator in the country. Mr. Smith also served as the vice-chair of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the council of securities regulators in Canada.

“For the Commission,” said Smith, “I believe it is time for new leadership to ensure this regulatory agency – so important to New Brunswick - meets the many challenges ahead. For myself, I look forward to continuing my career and discovering new opportunities to serve. However, I take great pride in having been a New Brunswick public servant for over 25 years and, in particular, these last five years as the founding Chair of the Commission. At the Commission we have created an internationally recognized regulatory agency whose positive influence and credibility is disproportionate to New Brunswick’s size and population. I believe we are viewed nationally and internationally as an effective, innovative and uncompromising regulator because of the unique vision fostered by our Members and staff. I very much appreciate their contribution to our success.”

Mr. Smith was instrumental in the drive to overhaul New Brunswick’s antiquated regulatory framework for securities, which dated back to 1935. He led the start-up and rapid growth of the Commission ensuring it could effectively fulfill its role of protecting investors and fostering New Brunswick’s fledgling capital markets. Under Mr. Smith’s stewardship, the Commission has demonstrated its role and relevance as a regulatory partner in Canada’s national system of securities regulation. It has also shown that New Brunswick’s public interest and drive for self-sufficiency is best served by having control over its securities regulatory process.

The Commission expects that a new chair and chief executive officer will be appointed by the Government in the near future.

ABOUT THE NEW BRUNSWICK SECURITIES COMMISSION

The New Brunswick Securities Commission is the Crown Corporation that regulates the securities industry in New Brunswick. It is funded indirectly by investors through industry. Its mandate is to protect investors from unfair, improper or fraudulent practices and foster fair and efficient capital markets, as well as confidence in those markets.

ABOUT DONNE SMITH

Donne Smith has over 25 years of experience in securities law. Previously, he was Administrator and Director of the Securities Administration Branch of the Department of Justice under the Security Frauds Prevention Act. For several years, he concurrently held the role of secretary of the Board of Commissioners of Public Utilities and Motor Carrier Board. Mr. Smith was also acting Chair of the Public Utilities Board in 2006. He is a member of the New Brunswick Law Society, the Canadian Bar Association and is a former vice-chair of the Canadian Securities Administrators.

54Hour StartUp Weekend Launches 3 New ICT Companies

Three different teams, which formed during the course of the event, are now in the process of incorporating in order to continue the development and marketing of the ideas that brought them together starting on Friday night.

GeoCure is a product that seeks to leverage the tremendous growth in adoption of social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter in order to track and present infection rates for many communicable diseases. “Young people like me don’t watch the news, read a paper, or even visit online new sources like CNN to get our information.” said Robert Foley, who pitched the idea of GeoCure, “We get all of our information from social media, a form of news which is more immediate and less filtered than traditional sources.” GeoCure seeks to collect content from various social media sources and use it to track the spread of infections in order to assist consumers in evaluating their risks. “We also think that there are potential applications for various public health organizations, as well as private enterprises that are in the health care space” stated Robert.

Another product that caught participants attention was ‘eCeipts’, an electronic receipt system that holds the potential to completely transform the way people shop and buy goods. “After every transaction at any retailer the final step in the process is for the cash register to print a paper receipt.” says Alex Scott who presented the eCeipts idea at the event, “Most of us simply throw the paper receipts away, or we lose them. For those who need to keep their receipts for the purposes of tracking expenses, losing them is a major hassle”. eCeipts looks to save consumers these hassles by capturing the information from traditional paper receipts and instead sending it to a database that sits behind a website. The website can be used to store and organize an individual’s receipts in a convenient and powerful format. The eCeipts team is in the process of incorporating and has launched a website at www.eceipts.ca as the first step toward building their eCeipts solution.

The final group that is moving toward incorporation is working on a web-based game called ‘Karmundi’. “We all believe we have an idea that creates a whole new genre of game that we call Progressive Social Gaming”, says Michael Wilcott, spokesman for the six member team that launched www.karmundi.com as part of the 54Hours weekend event. “I’d describe it as part Pokémon, part scavenger hunt, and part social networking” said Wilcott. “We are targeting families who are looking for fun activities that they can do together, that also allows parents to teach positive social values to their children while leveraging the tremendous power of the web to create communities”. The Karmundi team, whose slogan is “Karma. For The World”, is looking to launch a pilot of their new service by September of this year.

Jeff Roach of propel said the event is a perfect activity for stimulating entrepreneurship and new business formation at a grassroots level. “Many people have good ideas but very few are able to visualize what that idea looks like as a business.” says Roach. “This weekend event allows people to have fun expanding their ideas and having others share in building on their idea and growing a team of shared interests. We appreciate the efforts and enthusiasm of Jason Richard and Michael Wilcott who organized this event and are proud to sponsor this and future weekend events”. Roach said the propel Accelerator supports startup companies like these to help them grow rapidly to maturity and profitability with the support of a broad provincial network and hopes to see companies enter the program from events like this.

As to the 54Hours event itself, Matt Doherty, who joined the eCeipts team, summed it up this way, “…54hours was an experience akin to throwing a handful of seeds in a garden and seeing what grew. To have such a talented cross-section of people come together and create three businesses with actual opportunities is such a great outcome. Everyone who attended brought something different and being surrounded by these people showed me how myopic we can become in our day to day life. It was refreshing to be able to learn from and to interact with such a varied group. If I had to
pick one word to describe the weekend, it would be 'intense'”.

Organizers of New Brunswick’s first 54Hours event have already been approached to hold additional events in both Fredericton and Moncton over the coming year. For updates regarding these events and other 54Hour activities visit www.54hours.com and www.propelict.com.

Media Inquires:
Michael Wilcott, (506) 647-3269
Jeff Roach – (506) 642-9029

TORONTO—May 12, 2009—Information technology research firm IDC Canada has named AnyWare Group's ROAM solution as one of 10 Canadian Healthcare solutions to watch. In its 10 Canadian Healthcare Solutions to Watch (IDC #CA1TIW9) report, which was released yesterday, IDC profiles ten relatively small companies in Canada that offer solutions in the healthcare space that are positioned to make an impact in the market. The report provides insight into each solution, along with details about go-to-market strategies, partners, and customers.

"The healthcare industry is embarking on a transformation – from antiquated technologies and processes to innovative solutions that are all about managing efficiency and accessing large flows of people and information across systems and providers, to reduce costs and improve patient care," said Krista Napier, Analyst, Canadian ICT Innovation at IDC. "The companies in this study, including AnyWare Group, are well positioned to help change how healthcare is delivered, managed, and experienced in Canada. With the need for integration, improved efficiency, and access to information, hospitals stand to benefit from cost-effective, healthcare-specific, remote access solutions from a company such as AnyWare Group."

The IDC Canada report provides valuable information for other emerging companies in the Canadian technology marketplace, government organizations, and larger vendors and investors looking to identify partnership and investment opportunities.

According to Napier, "AnyWare Group was selected due to its success attracting customers across North America to date, its expertise and focus on remote solutions for healthcare, and its strategic alignment with key healthcare initiatives in Canada, including reducing wait times and improving physician efficiency."

AnyWare Group's ROAM platform enables clientless secure access to all healthcare applications and information from any PCs or Macs. Hospitals and healthcare jurisdictions are using ROAM to:

Provide a single secure access point for Interoperable EHR Systems (iEHR)

Shorten hospital wait times

Deliver health information and services regardless of geography

Improve physician efficiency

“We have successfully used AnyWare Group’s ROAM platform for the past 3 years to securely provide reports to community physicians and specialists, and provide secure remote access to the hospital’s health information system, PACS and other applications,” said Ed Norwich, IT Director of Cambridge Memorial Hospital. “AnyWare Group's expertise in healthcare and the flexibility of their ROAM product has also enabled us to securely deliver applications to regional users groups such as the regional transcription and dictation system. Additionally, we are able to turn up new applications and groups of users quickly by leveraging AnyWare’s engineering services that are included in their managed service. Over the past few years, our input into product development and the close working relationship we have with AnyWare Group has helped evolve ROAM into what I believe is a unique solution for healthcare.”

"We are pleased to be recognized as one of the ten Canadian healthcare solutions to watch," said Robert Lalonde, CEO, AnyWare Group. "This milestone reinforces our unique value to healthcare and recognizes the proven track record AnyWare Group has in this market. With hospitals across Canada and the United States using ROAM, our solution has a proven ability to securely provide information to healthcare workers when and where needed, thereby enabling these organizations to reach their goals without the technical or financial risks associated with alternative approaches."

About AnyWare Group

AnyWare Group is the leading remote access solution provider for hospitals and healthcare organizations. AnyWare Group's award-winning ROAM Platform enables clientless remote access to all applications from any device (PCs and Macs) without requiring the management of users' computers.
Report for propel ICT Shows Great Opportunity and Spurs New Talent Survey for the Sector

Author

Source

propel ICT

Source Url

Image

Image Caption

A Statistical Profile of the New Brunswick Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Industry

Body

New Brunswick, May 4, 2009 – A new report of the statistical profile of New Brunswick's ICT sector prepared for propel ICT and released today shows great opportunity for the province's sector as well as revealing data that much more work needs to be done to capitalize on it.

“The Survey shows that, in addition to capital, skill-specific talent for the ICT sector is required to take advantage of the opportunities we have” said Anita Punamiya, propel ICT Director and Chair of propel Talent. “This is an industry in dire need of a strategy that includes a priority on recruiting and training the talent pool that is currently lacking in our province.”

Among other details, the report shows:

New Brunswick is the only province to register a decline in the number of ICT firms BUT New Brunswick's ICT sector is still growing at double the rate of the rest of our economy, showing a great opportunity that we are not taking advantage of.

No single community in the province is leading the others in growth of their ICT sector. The profile shows Fredericton, Saint John, and Moncton are very comparable to each other in terms of opportunity and current size and strength of the sector, highlighting the need for the communities to work together to build a provincial industry.

The average ICT company in NB is larger than the average ICT company in other parts of the country, which indicates that support is missing for building a nimble, entrepreneurial culture of small innovative companies that feed the sector and support the larger emerging components of the sector.

“Start-up companies in the ICT sector need capital and people” said Jeff Roach, Executive Director of the propel Accelerator. “This is a people-driven economy and both large and small businesses need the right talent mix to grow their businesses.”

Jeff Reid, organizer of propel Talent and xwave Operations Manager for Saint John believes that the need for more people in our sector is one area where the industry is in full agreement. “propel Talent is a very actively supported initiative from across the province because we all agree that finding the right people for our sector is challenging and will likely get worse if we don't address it immediately” says Reid.

Starting this week, propel Talent is re-distributing a survey to New Brunswick ICT companies that it originally reported on in late 2006 that showed a great demand for people in the sector. “We expect, based on the anecdotal reports that we are already receiving, that, despite the recession, our industry is still growing. This survey and the report that will follow should make this a bit more tangible for us.” says Reid.

About propel ICT
propel ICT (http://propelICT.com) is a private, non-profit, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) organization focused on growing the ICT industry in New Brunswick

About propel Talent
The propel Talent initiative of propel ICT is an active committee of professionals from the ICT and education sectors focused on growing, attracting and retaining talent within the ICT sector of New Brunswick through an integrated workforce solution addressing: Attracting new students, Immigration for internationally-educated professionals, and Repatriation.

About propel Accelerator
The propel Accelerator is a support program that gives New Brunswick start-up ICT companies guidance and mentoring, access to low-cost resources such as equipment, office space, communications and support services, and, most importantly, membership in a business network that can be used to build partnerships or find new markets.

With doctors spread across 4 rural counties, Memorial Medical Center of West Michigan has implemented AnyWare Group's ROAM (Role Oriented Access Management) as the remote access platform to deliver their medical systems and applications, leading to more timely adherence to the hospital's "sign-off" policy.

All hospitals depend on physicians and radiologists to promptly "sign-off" on patient records – but it is challenging to encourage and sustain compliance when physicians are spread out over a wide rural area like Western Michigan. With ROAM, healthcare providers can access internal hospital systems, check patient records and sign-off reports, from home or in a distant office, improving the effectiveness, and lifestyles, of physicians, administrators and IT staff – who might otherwise be forced to stay overtime in the hospital.

"A high level of complexity can discourage consistent adherence to the "sign-off" policy," said Sue Luskin, IS Supervisor at MMCWM. "ROAM is so intuitive, it's easy to use right away and our physicians and staff took to it immediately."

Sue Luskin recently received an email sent by Lynn S. McCurdy, D.O., a radiologist. Dr. McCurdy wrote: "I just used ROAM to sign 28 reports (which were not transcribed yet when I left the hospital at 7:30 last night). It worked beautifully; in fact, much more smoothly than when I was editing and signing reports in house (perhaps because both I and the transcriptionist were busily accessing the list). Next time I won't stay late while the weather is deteriorating, knowing I can sign things from the safety of my home."

Memorial Medical also chose ROAM because it is "clientless" – so specialists in distant cities can be provided with a secure personalized portal that restricts access to only the systems and information they need, based on role, within minutes. Rural hospitals often rely on larger urban hospitals for consultations from on-call specialists, especially in emergency situations. Remote access systems that take days to add a new user, or require a high level of technical support for end users, are not well suited for this situation.

"We recently heard from a consulting radiologist from a large urban hospital who had provided a diagnosis for one of our emergency patients," said Sue Luskin. "He said that consulting to Memorial Medical was such a wonderful experience – that we could set him up with a new temporary user account immediately and, within minutes, he was reviewing images and dictating his diagnosis. He was very impressed with the ease with which ROAM had made records available."

Prior to introducing ROAM, Memorial Medical provided access to their HIS through IPsec VPN, which required that IT staff either burn and mail out a CD or visit distant offices and homes to install a client on each of the personal computers belonging to authorized users on the network. It was very time consuming for IT staff and tends to act as a disincentive to granting remote access to new users.

"We at AnyWare Group are very excited to be working with Memorial Medical on this important initiative that truly highlights the unique capabilities of the ROAM Platform," said Robert Lalonde, CEO of AnyWare Group Inc. "By providing authorized physicians, clinicians and managers with a single point of access to hospital systems and applications, ROAM is helping Memorial Medical improve the work life and efficiency of physicians and staff."

Participants begin by Sharing idea pitches beginning on Friday evening and will then divide into teams to work on bringing the ideas to market by the following Monday morning. “The entire weekend is meant to be a fun way for members of the ICT and business community to interact and network with one another at a deeper level than is generally possible at a traditional industry event,” says Michael Wilcott, an ICT project manager based in Saint John who is one of the organizers. “54 Hours will be a lot of fun, and will hopefully result in the creation of several web-based enterprises that will enrich New Brunswick's ICT environment”.

There is no cost to attend the event and the only requirement is a little skill, a positive attitude and a willingness to roll with the punches. The atmosphere is meant to be fun and the entire process organic. “We’ve adopted the slogan 'No Talk. All Action.' for the event and we are intentionally keeping the agenda loosely defined. We want to the weekend to be like the early days of a startup, where creativity and frenetic energy are the norm and there aren’t a lot of rules”, says Wilcott.

So what happens when the weekend is over? Above all, it is hoped that a strong community bond will form but beyond that, it depends on the group. Some groups work beyond the weekend and continue to build and market their products; some may incorporate as companies and even engage in angel rounds. Issues like ownership and shares are determined by the members of a team over the course of the weekend and 54Hours will not retain any ownership of any company that might be formed over the course of the event.

"We strongly support these grassroots, creative activities that help people visualize what their ideas might look like in the shape of a business." says Jeff Roach of propel ICT. "There are plenty of good ideas but few people give their ideas legs. We are as interested as everyone else to see what might come from this weekend."

To participate in this fun, unique networking event, please visit www.54Hours.com and sign up for this free event!

-end-

KIRA awards have been recognizing achievement in information technology industries for 11 years

Author

Lucas Roze

Source

Daily Gleaner, Published Tuesday April 21st, 2009

Source Url

http://dailygleaner.canadaeast.com/rss/article/641616

Image

Image Caption

Body

For over a decade, one event in May has been recognizing excellence in information technology (IT), information and communication technology (ICT) and information and learning technology (ILT) throughout the province. This gala event is none other than the KIRA awards.

Celebrating its 11th year, recipients of a KIRA award have demonstrated in their nomination that they have excelled, innovated or grown in any or all fields of IT, ICT, and ILT.

With seven distinctive categories, the KIRA awards are divided in such a way that the event covers the wide range of technological skill sets that are thriving in our province. These categories are the following:

- Export Product

- Export Service

- Employment Growth

- Most Promising Start-Up

- Technological Advancement / Innovation - Private Sector

- Technological Advancement / Innovation - Public Sector

- Industry Person of the Year

All nominees for a KIRA award have clearly demonstrated what they have done within New Brunswick and abroad to advance themselves in this highly competitive environment. Bottom line is that New Brunswickers should be proud of the pioneering work that is being done in our backyard. We must also remember that the extreme reach of the Internet forces these tech companies to not only deal with local competitors, but international ones as well. And yet they are still making huge strides in their respective fields.

The KIRA awards were created to take time and recognize all the great things these organizations and industry leaders are doing on a global platform from their offices in New Brunswick. Hosted by Enterprise Fredericton, the KIRA awards is our way to shine the spotlight on these genuinely deserving organizations and individuals.

Congratulations to this year's KIRA finalists from all corners of the province. To see the full list, please visit the official site at www.KIRAawards.ca. Also a special thanks to all our sponsors, who truly make this event possible.

This year, the KIRA awards will be held at the Delta Fredericton Hotel on Thursday, May 7. Don't miss your chance to enjoy a five-course meal with the best and brightest in the industry. Contact Wendy Gallant at Enterprise Fredericton (444-4686) for ticket information.

Lucas Roze is a communications officer for Enterprise Fredericton. He can be reached at lucas.roze@ent-fredericton.ca.
